World We Dare to Imagine- Part III

THE HIGHER PAY for TEACHERS PROJECT is a nonpartisan organization dedicated to raising awareness around the effect of our national policy of underpaying and under-valuing educators. We are committed to working with everyone in the country to ensure teaching becomes the prestigious, desirable, financially viable, and professionally exciting job we all know it needs to be.

At our organization we are aiming to raise teachers’ pay. When teachers are not paid professionally, students suffer the consequences; the recommendation of The Higher Pay for Teachers Project is that stakeholders in each state press their leaders to explore options for raising teacher pay. We hope to meaningfully address the teacher pay gaps that too often keep talented teachers from working in our neediest schools and hard to staff subjects. While teachers are not primarily motivated by pay, we believe raising their salary is nonetheless critical to fostering an environment in which education is valued and attracting and retaining top talent is enhanced.

The Higher Pay for Teachers Project will address issues that need to be resolved. The stakeholders in each state will then work with the leaders to make the pay raise happen. Here are some issues that will be tackled:

• Increasing salaries overall
• Increasing starting salaries
• Increasing long-term salary potential
• Ensuring salaries are competitive to recruit and retain teachers
• Salary increases for hard-to-staff schools
• Salary increases for hard-to-staff subjects
• Salary increases based on teacher effectiveness
• Bonuses based on teacher effectiveness
• Changing the teacher salary scale or system
• Tiered certification process, increased salaries at higher certification phases

We would like to propagate the importance of these people who supported our parents mold us to who we are right now. The whole community surrounding us right now, the leaders of our society, upholders of peace, they won't be there if not for the teachers. Teachers are the second parents to us that need to get paid what they are worth, and we hope to be able to do that.

In this random blog post I will talk about my recent medical condition I had that made me end up in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). About a week before spring break, I started coughing. I thought it was just a regular cough that would go away. But It was not. It was a very bad dry cough with zero mucus coming out. Gradually I started feeling shortness of breath and could not sleep at night. On March 16 I went to the student health center to see what is going on. Upon arrival at the health center, they took my vitals and my Oxygen saturation value was at 88%. Healthy individuals exhibit oxygen saturation values between 96% and 99%. They did a chest x-ray and gave me a Nebulizer breathing treatment which brought my oxygen saturation level up to 94%. I enjoyed reading Mike Brown's "How I killed Pluto and why it had it coming". I found it interesting how Mike Brown, who is an astronomer at Caltech, always wanted to discover planets and he ended up killing Pluto! This was an easy-to-read book for me, considering English is my second language and that I am not a big fan of reading over all, let alone not a book in my native language. By reading this book I learned how Brown always wanted to discover planets, the long sleepless nights that he had looking through telescopes and going through data, writing up computer programs for his found data and... . He basically loved astronomy and the solar system. I think Brown gave a human dimension to his book by telling us about how he met his wife, Diane, and also the birth of his daughter, Lilah.
